She fell inward
deeply
With long dancer legs
it was supposed to be a leap forward
a lily pond leap into another kind of existence
bold
brazen
there was no leap
no jump
no running start
just a deep breath and a glance forward
before
falling back
the sigh of resignation
retreating
backing down and backing up
tighter into the self
she blamed the wind
the ice
the pond that had frozen over so quickly
she blamed the warmth that was once an ally
now a forgotten dream against her skin
she blamed him
she blamed herself
she cursed her muse
the gods, the ink and the parchment
she cried
defeat
was not accepted easily
surprised
that she accepted it at all
the seasons didn’t change
she did
her perception of the world
of those in it
of staying true or staying confined
it was a dark day
the day she fell inward.
