[Prompt: Bridge]
an impasse solved
by the stretch and span of metal and steel
sitting at the table
their faces lined with memories and wisdom
it is their experiences
that could heal the gaps between generations
they play
with full decks
laugh and reminisce about
the “way things used to be”
they deal
in diamonds, clubs, hearts and spades
one card at a time
bridge players
Author’s Note
The prompt was for “bridge” – specifically looking at images of the word, which bring up hundreds of picturesque scenes of bridges around the world. For whatever reason, the first thing that popped into my head when I saw “bridge” was a bunch of old ladies drinking tea and playing cards. Trying to relate the two didn’t pan out as gracefully as I’d hoped and I have a feeling I’ll be tweaking this poem more over time.
